W4V - Sponsored by the Shenandoah Valley Amateur Radio Club (SVARC), based in Winchester, VA.

This Special Event Station is in recognition of Lee-Jackson Day 2015 (Friday January 16th) and will run from Friday, January 16th through Sunday January 18th.

Lee-Jackson Day is a recognized holiday of the Virginia Commonwealth in recognition for the birthdays of two great American Civil War generals: Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson

Please join SVARC members in celebrating the Commonwealth's annual Lee-Jackson Day for 2015, and the event occurs on January 16th.

Lee-Jackson Day commemorates the birth of two great Civil War Generals: Robert E Lee (1/19/1807) and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson (1/21/1824).

SVARC Club Members (residing in Virginia) can operate from 2000 Local Friday, January 16th (0100Z 1/15) through 1900 Local  Sunday, January 18 (0000Z 1/19).

All HF and VHF/UHF frequencies are allowed and all modes are allowed.

In the past, the greatest activity has been on HF, mostly SSB; however members are encouraged to use CW and the Digital modes as well as FM where allocated.

Any questions/issues please email Rich, K3VAT at k3vat@arrl.net.

SVARC Hosting JOTA Activity - October 18th, 2014

posted Oct 6, 2014, 8:16 PM by Michael Wolff

The 57th annual JAMBOREE-ON-THE-AIR will be held the 3rd full weekend in October. This is a worldwide event involving Cubs Scouts, Boy Scouts and Ventures talking to Scouts from all over the world. It's not a contest, but rather an avenue of introducing Scouts to ham radio. Any ham can take part starting on "The JOTA Jump Start" on Friday evening Oct. 17th.

The following bands and modes are used for this event - 6 to 80 meters SSB, CW, and PSK-31, 2 meter FM, 70 CM FM, D-STAR, IRLP, APRS and ECHO LINK.

JOTA is all about getting young people to talk to each other using amateur radio.

W4RKC has been registered with the Boy Scouts.

Dave Adsit and Wayne Koehler are registered merit badge councilors if any boy or leader wants to get the radio merit badge.

Mike K4AEA has been working to prepare the club stations to host this event.

Activities at the SVARC club house will commence at 8:00am on Saturday, October 18th, 2014.

Members are encouraged to participate - please contact Wayne K. (KE4PMS) for details on how you can be involved.

Club Meeting - Friday, June 20th, 2014

posted Jun 18, 2014, 10:01 PM by SV ARC

Please join us this Friday evening (June 20th, 2014, 7:30 PM EDT) at the club house (2921 Grace Street, Winchester, VA). We will have a regular business meeting, and discuss Field Day preparations in lieu of a program.

Other highlights I’ve been asked to share -

I’ve heard from several folks that the parking lot resurfacing project voted on at the last meeting has been completed. Thank you to Sam (W4WSE) for all of the work in ensuring follow through and execution on this undertaking on behalf of all of us!

John (N4MM) has also shared with me that he picked up several members’ (N1TL, W4ARZ, W4WSE, WD4KNX, KB3ALR, K4GJF corrected one, N8GM, WA2RPX, W3IF, K4CTL, and K3VAT) Virginia QSO Party participation certificates, and plans to present them at this Friday night’s meeting. If you are one of the persons holding a call sign listed above, John has asked that you please be present this Friday evening to receive your certificate. Those not claimed at the meeting will be left at the club house to picked up at another time.

REMINDER: SVARC Meeting - April 18th, 2014

posted Apr 16, 2014, 7:58 PM by Michael Wolff   [ updated Sep 22, 2014, 4:23 PM by SV ARC ]

Greetings fellow SVARC'ers:

Just a friendly reminder of the regular second monthly meeting at the club house this coming Friday evening at 7:30 PM. Our plan is to have a regular business meeting, then a presentation on digital interfacing between computers and amateur radio equipment by yours truly (Mike, KG4Y).

A meeting minutes draft was sent previously ( shortly following the last meeting in March), so I've not included a copy here; however, here are a couple of reminders of up-coming events and deviations from the normal schedule of things (after this coming Friday's meeting):

  1. The Shrimp Feed social gathering is on the calendar for 6:00 PM Saturday, April 26th, 2014, at the Shenandoah Council Boy Scout center down on Shawnee Road. You should have received a separate e-mail (prior to this one) covering the specifics, but if you can, bring your significant others (i.e. spouses and children) and join us, for this long-standing SVARC tradition! If you are able to attend, please let Laura Stewart (hyperlink removed to prevent spamming Laura from web posts ) know how many to expect, and also if you can bring a covered dish to share your culinary craft with us!
  2. The regularly scheduled first May 2013 meeting is canceled on account of conflicting with the annual Winchester Apple Blossom Festival. We will resume regular meetings on the third Friday in May (May 16th, 2014). While many of you will likely be in Dayton for the annual Hamvention at that time, we are still planning to hold a regular meeting at this point.

Thank You all for your continued support, and I hope to see you all this coming Friday evening!

Respectfully and 73,

Mike - KG4Y
Secretary - Shenandoah Valley Amateur Radio Club
